JEANNETTE AND JEANNOT. English, Air (whole time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The song "Jeannette and Jeannot (The Conscript's Departure)" was composed in the late 1840's by wikipedia:Charles_William_Glover (1806–1863) to words by Charles Jeffereys. It begins:
You are going faw away, far away from poor Jeannette,
There is no one left to love me now, and you, too, may forget
But my heart will be with you, wherever you may go,
Can you look me in the face and say the same Jeannot?
When I wear the jacket red and the beautiful cockade,
Oh I fear that you'll forget all the promises you made;
With a gun upon your shoulder and your bayonet by your side.
You'll be taking some fair lady and be making her your bride,
You'll be taking some fair lady and be making her your bride.
Glover (elder brother of songwriter Stephen Glover) was a violinist and composer, was born in London in February 1806. He played the violin in the orchestras of Drury Lane and Covent Garden theatres, and was appointed musical director at the Queen's Theatre in 1832. He composed numerous songs, duets, pianoforte pieces, and arrangements.
The melody is contained in the music manuscript collection of curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan (1878-1952), Oriel region, south Ulster[1].
- ↑ Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor came to believe the ms. is not the work of the curate but rather was originally compiled by an unknown but able fiddler over the course of a playing lifetime, probably in the late 19th century. The ms. later came into the possession of Donnellan, who was also a fiddler.
