LANSDOWNE LASS, THE. AKA and see "McDermott's Reel (2)," "Mick O'Connor's Reel." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by County Roscommon flute and tin whistle player Jose McDermott [1] (1925-1992).

Josie McDermott

When visiting America in the mid-1980's McDermott stayed with the Egan family in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The 'Lansdowne Lass' is a reference to Seamus Egan's mother. See also the closely related "Slate Roof (The)," also published in the Mulvihill collection, and the Paddy Taylor composition "Katie Taylor." "Sailing into Walpole's Marsh" shares the first strain with "Lansdowne Lass", although the second strains differ.
