LIEUTENANT COLONEL BAILLIE OF LEYS. Scottish, Strathspey. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The estate of Leys is near Inverness, Scotland. The composition is attributed to James Anderson of Inverness in biography:Donald Grant's Collection of Stathspeys, Reels, Jigs &c. (1820-21[1]). Lieutenant Colonel Baillie of Leys (d. 1833) was an Anglo-Indian officer, recorded as having been a "director of the East India Company". He served briefly as a Member of Parliament in 1832 for the district of burghs, and, as was customary, he sponsored a dinner for his leading constituents. The local paper (Inverness Courier) remarked:
August 25. The new members entertained the leading inhabitants to dinner. The dinner given by Colonel Baillie in the Caledonian Hotel at Inverness is described as superb. "Two turtles, which had been ordered from London by the member, were served up in a style that would have thrown Meg Dods into ecstasies, while the various wines champagne, Madeira, claret, &c. were equally excellent.
