LYAR, THE. English, Jig. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in print in Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773). It also appears, as do several of Thompson's 1773 tunes, in the 1788 commonplace book of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner of Norwich, Conn. The Lyar is the name of a play by dramatist Samuel Foote, first performed in 1762 at Covent Garden.
