MARQUIS WELLINGTON. AKA - "Lord Wellington." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), the hero of the Peninsular Wars and Waterloo, was raised to the title of 1st Marquess of Wellington in 1812. He subsequently became the Duke of Wellington in May, 1814.
The tune was entered as "Lord Wellington" in the 1823 music manuscript collection of Robert Hughes (Whitchurch, Shropshire).
