MARTHA QUADRILLE. Austrian, Quadrille. A set of quadrilles based on von Flotow's opera Martha (1847), or Martha ader der Markt van Richmond (Martha, or The Fair at Richmond), a work that was itself based on the ballet-pantomime Lady Henriette, ou La Servante de Greenwich (Lady Henrietta, or the Servant-Girl of Greenwich) by J.H. Vernoy de Saint-Georges. In a coincidence, both Johann Strauss the elder and younger, composed quadrille sets based on themes from the opera. Strauss the younger was touring at the time the news of the opera's success reached him, and he composed his quadrille sets in isolation from his father. They ended up having chosen different themes from the opera for their respective quadrilles.
