MAJOR MURRAY. AKA - "Mayor Murrey's Reel." Irish, Reel (cut or whole time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. "Major Murray" (sometimes mistakenly given as "Mayor Murray") is contained in two important Irish musicians collections of the late 19th century. County Leitrim musician biography:Stephen Grier included it in his large 1883 music manuscript as "Major Murrey", while curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan (1878-1852) has it in his c. 1909 music manuscript collection as "Major Murray's Reel"[1]

  1. Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor came to believe the ms. is not the work of the curate but rather was originally compiled by an unknown but able fiddler over the course of a playing lifetime, probably in the late 19th century. The ms. later came into the possession of Donnellan, who was also a fiddler.

. The tunes are cognate, but not identical, and there are significant melodic differences; yet they are still the same tune. Fr. John Quinn finds that Donnellan’s arrangement of parts differs from that of Grier, and is set in a different order that he feels is "incorrect, and with the G string notes raised an octave. Grier’s ABCD is reordered to BCDA by Donnellan, but what proves that Grier’s is the correct order is the final flurry of the tune, which occurs in the D part."
