MERRY CHRISTMAS [1], A. AKA and see "Rose Bush." Irish, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A version of the tune was published in William Bradbury Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883) as "Rose Bush." O'Neill credits it to Sergeant James O'Neill, his collaborator and transcriber, but it seems likely this is one of the tunes that O'Neill adapted from other collections, in this case from Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883). The first strains of Ryan's "Rose Bush" and O'Neill's "Merry Christmas" are identical, but the second strains differ somewhat after the first couple of bars.
