MERRY GIRLS OF MAIDSTONE. English, Jig. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody and dance instructions first appear in John Hinton's periodical Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1755). The tune also appears in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758).

Maidstone is the county town of Kent, 32 miles southeast of London, on the river Medway, once known for its breweries.
