MERRY STROLLERS, THE. AKA and see "Deceivers (The)." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. In addition to the London publisher Samuel, Ann and Peter Thompson's 1788 printing, the tune as "Merry Strollers" appears in John Carr's First Book of Cotillions (New York, 1801) and James Hewitt's (1770-1827) Fashionable Repertory... of Country Dances & Waltzes (New York, 1807). However, the same melody had been published in London by Thomas Skillern as "Deceivers (The)" in 1781, predating the Thompsons.
