John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Daniel Dow's Twenty Minuets and Sixteen Reels or Country Dances (c. 1775, p. 35), and in his A Collection of Ancient Scots Tunes for the Violin (also c. 1775, p. 33).
