"Miss Doublas Brigton's Jigg" can be found in Perthsire fiddler-composer biography:John Bowie's Collection of strathspey reels & country dances &c., printed in Edinburgh around the year 1789. It was entered into the music manuscript copybook of Massachusetts fifer Seth Johnson (The Woburn Fife Manuscript), compiled in the first half of the 19th century, and in the large music manuscript copybook of Manchester, England, musician John Roose (c. 1850).

The Douglas family had acquired Brigton in 1742 from the Earls of Strathmore – the Lyon family. Miss Douglas, Brigton, may have been one the children of William Douglas (1745-1814), a domiciled Scotchman (i.e. a Laird), who, in November, 1767, on his marriage with Elizabeth Graham, daughter of robert Graham, 11th of Fintry, settled his hereditary estate of Brigton, Forfarshire, on himself and his heirs male, with a provision for younger children. William Douglas, of ancient family and considerable property, was also proprietor of other family estates, situated at Glammis and Broughty Ferry, in Scotland. William and Elizabeth were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. The daughters, one of whom was presumably Bowie's "Miss Douglas Brigton", were Margaret (1768-1852), Anne (1771-1845), and ?.
