MISS MARY MACKAY'S REEL. Scottish, Jig (6/8 time). C Major. Standard tune (fiddle). AAB. "Miss Mary Mackay's Reel" was composed by Edinburgh fiddler-composer and bandleader Robert Mackintosh (c. 1745-1808), and was printed in his Fourth Collection of New Strathspey Reels (c. 1804). Despite the word 'reel' in the title, the tune is a 6/8 time jig. According to musicologist Charles Gore, Mackintosh's convention was to name jigs as 'reels', a practice shared by a few of his contemporaries. Whether the term 'reel' refers to a dance in this context is not known.
