MISS PEGGY MONTGOMERIE. Scottish, Triple Hornpipe (3/2 time). E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1782 second collection (p. 54), printed in Glasgow by James Aird.

The title may honor Margaret Montgomerie, last child of Alexander Montgomerie, 4th Bart. of Coilsfield, and his wife Lilias Montgomerie. She married John Dalrymple (later Hamilton) of Bargenny in 1772. She was the sister of Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, Lord Ardrossan (1739-1819). Riddell composed several tunes in honor of the extended family (see "Bargenny's/Balgeny's Bowling Green," "Woods of Bargenny (The)," "Mr. Alexander Montgomerie" and "Mrs. Hamilton of Bargenny", which also may have been composed for Margaret after her marriage).
