MISSISSIPPI. American, March (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. A variant of "Even and Odd, Like Tom with His Hod," "Tempest (1) (The," "Ap Shenkin," "Dear Little Island (The)," and a southwest Pennsylvania collected untitled square dance. The tune appears under the "Mississippi" title set as a march in Bruce & Emmett's "Drummers' and Fifers' Guide" (1862), an instruction manual for musicians in the Northern (Federal) army.
