MOCASSIN TWO-STEP. AKA - "Mi'kmaq Tune," "Mocassin Shuffle," "Old Mocassin Shuffle." Canadian, Two-Step (2/4 or 4/4 time). Canada, New Brunswick. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. "Moccasin Two-Step" is from the playing of Oscar "Joe" Robichaud (d. 1999), a fiddler from northern New Hampshire who, depending on the story, learned the tune from a Mi'kmaq trader, or he learned the tune from a trapper friend (or his father, by another account) who said he acquired it from a Native American (Mi'kmaq) musician in New Brunswick. The tune was untitled, so Robichaud invented the name "Mocassin Two-Step" for his version. Joe is related by marriage to the Riendeau family of Berlin, New Hampshire, who recorded an LP in the mid-1970's.
