MOIRREY NY GAINLE. AKA - "Moirrey ny Cainle."" AKA and see "Mary of the Candle." Manx, Air or Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A traditional dance (performed with candles) and tune from the Isle of Mann, associated with "Laa'l moirrey ny gianle" or Candlemas Day, February 2nd. A girl with a lighted candle, in the role of Moirrey/Mary, leads four other couples, and in the course of the dance the four men light their candles from that of Moirrey/Mary, and then process off. On Manx it was said on Candlemas Day,
Laa Moirrey ny gianle,
Lieh foddyr as lieh aile.
that half of the fodder and half of the firing, would be a fair amount to have in unconsumed stock before the new turf and the new fodder would come in.
