MONAGHAN TWIG [1], THE. AKA and see "Alasdair MacAlister," "Mountain Twig (The)," "Tinker's Apron (2) (The)." Irish, Reel. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Black): AAB (Sullivan). Bill Black (1996) notes that the source for O'Brien and Kelly's version is fiddler Seán Maguire's father Johnny, a County Cavan whistle player. See also the similar Donegal reel "Monaghan Switch (The)" (the is some confusion between the two because of the similarity of the titles and some melodic material). The first strain of "Monaghan Twig" is also cognate with the first strains of "Tom Keane's Reel" and "I'm Ready Now." The Scottish melody "Alasdair MacAlister" is a distanced cognate, probably ancestral, version.
