MORE THE MERRIER, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/2 time). G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune dates to 1696 when it was published by Henry Playford in London in Part II (supplement to) 9th edition of the Dancing Master [1]. "The More the Merrier" was retained in the long-running series of editions through the 18th and final volume of 1728 (then published by successor John Young). It was also printed by rival publishers John Walsh in The Compleat Country Dancing Master (editions of 1718 and 1734, and by his son, also John Walsh, in 1754).
