MOUNT VERNON WALTZ. American, Waltz (3/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. Composed by Michael Higgins and published in his Original Dances, Waltzes & Hornpipes for the Violin (1829, p. 11). Although nothing is known of Higgins, this tune demonstrates that he was an accomplished violinist capable of position playing on the instrument. Higgins' volume contains many New York City and environs place names, and the title of this waltz probably refers to Mount Vernon, New York, a town in southern Westchester County that borders on the NYC borough of the Bronx.
