MOUNTEBANK, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was printed by London publisher John Johnson in his Wright's Compleat Collection of Celebrated Country Dances (1740), authored by dancing master Daniel Wright. It appears to be unique to that collection. A mountebank is a liar, cheat, quack, masquerader, or otherwise dishonest person.
