MR. EDWARD WAGSTAFF'S FANCY. Scottish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). While Marshall was Steward to the Household to the 4th Duke of Gordon, Edward Wagstaff was steward to his son, the Marquis of Huntly. Like Mashall’s sons, Wagstaff’s son received a commission or was recommended by the Gordons. Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchies mentions in her period memoir that Wagstaff Jr. rose to the rank of Major, and that even his father Edward “was given a more senior position on the staff as ground officer!” (Moyra Cowie, The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999).
