"Mr. John Campbell Ardmore's Favorite" was first printed in Islay fiddler-composer biography:Alexander Mackay's Collection of Reels, Strathspeys and Slow Tunes (c. 1822), a second tune for John Campbell (the first being Mackay's own composition "Mr. John Campbell Ardmore's Strathspey." Mackay did not claim this composition, however, and, taking the title at face value it must be assumed that this was a tune that he enjoyed. Mackay was perhaps a music teacher to the family of Archibald and Helen Campbell of Ardmore, Islay.
