MR. MOTLEY'S ST. JAMES'S. AKA - "Motley's St. James's." English, Country Dance Tune and Jig. G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in all four editions of London publisher John Young's Second Volume of the Dancing Master [1] (1718-1728). It also appears in Walsh & Hare's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master (1719) as "Mr. Motley's St. James." John Playford published a tune called "Motleys Maggot" in his Second Part of Musick's Hand-Maid (1689), and it may be that Motley or Motleigh was a dancing master or musician.
