NEW YEAR'S DAY IN THE MORNING. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was first published in John Hinton's periodical Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1755, p. 86 ), for an audience that was growing more sophisticated and independent of the dancing master for instruction in the latest dances. It was followed by printings in Charles and Samuel Thompson's first country dance collection (London, 1757), and in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758). The Thompson's reprinted it in their Complete Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, 1773). The title would seem to be a variant of the rather more widespread "Christmas Day in the Morning" title (applied to several different tunes).
