NEWCASTLE HILL. AKA and see "Newcastle Hornpipe (1) (The)." Scottish, English, Canadian; Hornpipe or Clog. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The hornpipe was composed by fiddler and renowned hornpipe composer James Hill (c. 1815-c. 1860), a native of Dundee who spent most of his life at Gateshead, northeast England, near Newcastle, Northumberland. His title as "Newcastle Hornpipe." Canadian radio and TV fiddler Don Messer recorded it as "Newcastle Hill," and also recorded another James Hill composition, "High Level Hornpipe (1)", calling it "Highland Hornpipe" as it is called in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883).
