NOBLE SHRIVE, THE. English, Dance Air (6/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The air appears in a MS of virginal music which Chappell (1859) believes contains air mostly traceable to the sixteenth century. Supporting this he notes that the word Shrive, which is an old form of Shire-reeve or Sheriff, had disappeared by the 17th century.
