NORTHERN MEETING (THE). Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The strathspey "Northern Meeting" was composed by Captain biography:Simon Fraser of Knockie. See also Fraser's "North Hunt (The)" and "Rendezvous (The)," composed as well for the same event, the Northern Meeting, held every month of October, which Fraser wrote was "the rendezvous of all the beauty and fashion in the north of Scotland." The Northern Meeting commenced in 1798 and early editions featured dinners, balls, concerts, and horse races. In the mid-19th century piping and dancing competitions were added. Since the mid-20th century the prestigious piping competition has been held in September, and caries on the tradition of the Northern Meeting.
