NOW IS THE TIME. AKA and see "Aldridge's Rant," "Highland Reel (1) (A)," "Humors of Ballyconnell (1) (The)," "Lustian's Reel," "Scotch Reel (7) (A)." American, Reel (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. "Now is the Time", a reel, is attributed to Hirschel Fenton by George H. Coes. There is little information to be found on Fenton, although he may be the "H. Fenton" who was with Birch, Bowers & Fox's Minstrels in 1857 and 1858, chiefly based in St. Louis. However, the reel could not have been composed by Fenton (nor does it have an American provenance) as a close version is contained in the 1760's music manuscript collection of Cumbrian musician Joseph Barnes as the generically-titled "Scotch Reel (7) (A)." James Aird, in Glasgow, printed it as "Highland Reel (1) (A)" at the end of the 18th century, and there are yet earlier antecedents. See note for "annotation:Humors of Ballyconnell (1) (The)" for more.
