OLD MAID [2], THE. English, Country Dance Tune. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The melody is unique to London publisher Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1765 country dance collection. The title of the tune is perhaps a reference to Irish-born barrister, journalist, actor, and playwright Arthur Murphy's (1727-1805) two act comedy The Old Maid, performed at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane in 1761.
