OLD MAN [3], THE. Scottish. "The Old Man" is a tune from the Straloch Manuscript (1627), a copy of which was made by George Farquhar Graham in 1847, the only survivor after the original lute manuscript was lost. An elaboration of the tune appears in the Skene Manuscript (c. 1640), in lute tablature, under the title "Long Er Onie Old Man." Nigel Gatherer sees similarities between this tune and the American old-time tune "Barlow Knife (1)."
