OLD TENTH, THE. AKA and see "Gallant 69th (The)," "Gals of Sixty-Nine," "Irishman's Shanty." American, March (6/8 time). USA, southwestern Pa. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Bayard (1981) identifies this as one of the "Welcome Home" family of tunes. The title perhaps refers to a place in a set or performance list, or a military unit, however, the march setting of the melody appears to have been derived from a popular 1860's song air, "Irishman's Shanty."
