PATRICK KELLY. Irish, Planxty (6/8 time). G Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). The tune was first published in John Lee's A Favourite Collection of the so much admired old Irish Tunes, the original and genuine compositions of Carolan, the celebrated Irish Bard (Dublin, 1780), followed by Samuel, Ann & Peter Thompson's Hibernian Muse (London, c. 1786), and John Mulholland's Collection of Ancient Irish Airs (Belfast, 1810). O'Sullivan (1958) remarks: "The subject is probably Patrick Kelly of Scrugg, in the parish of Killinvoy, County Roscommon, who died in 1741."
