PENNY ON THE WATER. AKA and see: "Italian Schottische (The)," "Seven Step Polka," "Seven Step Schottische," "Up in the North." English, Hornpipe (4/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The tune was played in 1943 by the Dorset Trio (Kingston, Dorset) under the title "Italian Schottische (The)," although the association with Italy may be spurious. It is identical to the German folk dance called the Seibenschritt. The melody was used to accompany the dance The Seven Step Schottische, and was the vehicle for the children's song "Penny on the Water."

Penny on the water, tuppence on the sea,
Thruppence on the roundabout, and round go we.
