PETROLIA REEL, THE. Canadian, Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed Feb., 16, 1966, by Cape Breton fiddler Dan R. MacDonald (1911-1976), according to John Donald Cameron (Trip to Windsor, 1994). However, MacDonald's reel was printed a 1962 publication, R. J. MacDonald's Collection of Original Scots Tunes, Strathspeys, Jigs and Dances for the Violin, Book 3, which predates Cameron's assertion. The tile honors the south Ontario town of Petrolia [1], founded in 1866 and named for the oil that was found there.
