PICKING COTTON DOWN SOUTH.American, Country Rag. USA, Missouri. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Played by fiddler Tommy Jackson in the 1940’s on the radio, according to source Hartje, however, there is no record that Jackson ever recorded the tune. It was, however, recorded in 1950 by the Western Swing group 101 Ranch Boys, formed in Kansas City in the 1930's. The nucleus of the group was steel guitarist Leonard T. Zinn, guitar player Andy Reynolds, fiddler Cliff Brown and accordionist Smokey Roberts. They eventually moved to York, Pennsylvania, where they were featured on a long running and very popular radio show in the 1940s.
