PICKING UP STICKS. AKA and see "Kitty McGee, Kitty Magee," "Lavena." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time ). D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The name of the dance is "Picking up Sticks," to the tune of "Lavena, or The Passionate Lover," published by Playford in his English Dancing Master (1651). Cecil Sharp, in his Country Dance Book (1916), set the dance Picking of Sticks to the tune of another Playford dance, "Lavena," and thus it is a relatively modern pairing. See "Picking of Sticks" for the original Playford tune to the dance steps. Barnes (1986) notes that during the siding part of the country dance to the tune "Kitty McGee" is often played, in the form ABB,AABB,ABB.
