PRECIEUSE, LA (Precious). French, Jig. A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. An 18th century jig adopted by English Country Dance musicians. It was printed by in Paris by P.J. Chaxelle around 1792 in his Recueil des Meilleurs Contredanses Arrangées Pour le Flageolet [1] (c. 1792, p. 10)., although some sources say Chaxelle may have died in 1782. Chaxelle records with the tune title that the composition is par Joly, and indicates on the collection cover that he is only the arranger. There is a similar sounding “La Precieuse” in Giovanni Andrea Gallini’s New Collection of Forty-Four Cotillons (London, 1770).
