PROVINCIAL DANCE, THE. English, Country Dance Tune and Polka (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is said to be from Francesco Geminiani’s (1687-1762) The Entire New and Complete Tutor for the Violin, however, the volume under that title is not Geminiani's famous tretise The Art of the Violin (1740), but rather a later repackaging of some of Geminiani's precepts, with country dance tunes attached by the publisher. "Provincial Dance," however, is not among them. "Provincial Dance" was probably originally a country dance tune, employed in the 19th century as a polka.
