PUNCH IS DONE, THE. Scottish, Jig (6/8 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "The Punch is Done" is a jig published in Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire, postmaser, fiddler-composer and dancing master William Christie's 1820 collection. Christie notes that the tune was "Old" at the time, and says it was "communicated" to him by "Mr. Jaffrey Senior." "Gather and Go" and "Maggie gae back an' tak' up your Scullie" are 6/8 time march/jigs in Christie's collection that were obtained from Jaffrey Sr. The name Jaffray/Jaffrey was a fairly common surname in Cuminestown Parish, Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, the home of William Christie, and there is a record of a William Jaffray who was a teacher of music there who was a contemporary of Christie. See also Christie's tune "Mr. Jaffrey's (Junr.) Strathspey," composed for Jaffrey's son.=
