RAILROAD [5] REEL. American, Reel (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. This "Railroad Reel" ([5]), one of many with the title, was composed by blackface minstrel performer and composer biography:George H. Coes. It is an evocative piece, meant to simulate the sound of cars on a railroad, or perhaps the hammering from the laying of rails. It was perhaps inspired by the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in May, 1869, which would have been meaningful to Coes who had to take the long sea voyage to California in the 1850's when he performed there with various minstrel groups.
