RAVENSCROFT'S FANCY. AKA - "Ravencroft's Fancy." English, Country Dance Tune (3/2 time). E Flat Major (Walsh): G Major (Geoghegan). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCDE (Walsh): ABCDEF (Geoghegan): AABBCCDDEEFF (Walsh). The title points to association with Thomas Ravenscroft (c. 1588 – 1635), an English musician, theorist and editor, notable as a composer of rounds and catches, and especially for compiling collections of British folk music. He was responsible for the preservation of the largest collection of period popular vocal music in his three printed catch books: Pammelia (1609), Deuteromalia (1609), and Melismata (1611). Ravenscroft was one of the Waits of Tower Hamlets and a member of the band of Goodman Fields Playhouse, where many of the popular ballad operas were staged. He was apparently much sought after to play at balls and dancing parties and was known for his unique way of playing hornpipes.
