"Reel Malouin" is a "square" (i.e. not irregularly metered) version of "Contredanse (La)", popularized by the playing of Louis "Pitou" Boudreault and Lisa Ornstein. The tune is associated with M. Boudreault's Saguenay region of Québec, but is known in many regions of the province. The version here is attributed by fiddlerAimé Gagnon (1921-1997, Saint-Louis de Lotbinière) to the repertory ofFortunat Malouin (1870-1935), a fiddler from Québec City whose playing can be heard on several influential records from the 78 RPM era.
