REEL DU JOURNALIER (The Laborer). Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). Canada, Quebec. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A tune of unknown origin from the playing of Montreal fiddler Jospeh Allard (1873-1947), who recorded it for Victor in 1929. Another Montreal fiddler, J.O. LaMadeliene, a contemporary of Allard's, recorded a nearly identical version ten years later for Starr Records. Jean Duval notes that French-speaking individuals appeared in directory and census documents of the 1920's and 1930's as having the occupation journalier, meaning one who works with their hands [1].
