RIVER STAY AWAY FROM MY DOOR. Old-Time, Breakdown. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A blues influenced breakdown from North Carolina fiddler Charlie Knight, who was recorded playing the tune at Union Grove in 1962. Tempos vary among versions: Knight played it quite fast, but others have slowed it down to emphasize the blue notes. According to Bob Carlin (String Bands in the North Carolina Piedmont, 2004), Charlie Knight was a fiddler who ran a grocery story in the Lenoir, Caldwell County, North Carolina, area, near what is now the Pisgah National Forest (western N.C.).
