SAN MARTIN. English, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody appears in the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks, dated 1821. The tune itself bears the date 1822 on the ms. page. Unfortunately, nothing is known of Burks, although the provenance of his ms. is English. Perhaps the title refers to José de San Martín (1778-1850), the national hero of Argentina, who met with fellow South American liberator Simón Bolívar at Guayaquil, Ecuador, on July 22, 1822, and subsequently resigned his command.
