SAUGHEY RIGG. English, Hornpipe. England, Northumberland. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. . Composed by Robert Whinham (1814-1893), a musician, teacher, composer, dancing master and fiddler, originally from Morpeth. Saughy Rigg is a farm at Melkridge, near Haltwhistle, Hexham, Northumberland, on the Roman Wall, now converted to a bed-and-breakfast. A family named Fidler lived there in the 19th century, coincidently, says Graham Dixon (1995) who were well-known in the area as fiddlers and horse-dealers (see “Mrs. Fidler’s Fancy”).
