Nathaniel Gow refers not to James Boswell (1740-1795), the 9th Laird of Auchinleck, Ayrshire, famous as friend and amanuensis to Dr. Samuel Johnson in addition to being an author and diarist, and lawyer. Rather, the song is the work of his son Alexander, who was himself a lawyer and a poet. It may be that the father James did compose the jig “<incipit title="load:Cumming" width=850 link="https://tunearch.org/wiki/Honorable Mrs. Leslie Cuming (The)">Honorable Mrs. Leslie Cuming (The)</incipit>.”
