SHENANDOAH WALTZ. Old Time, Waltz (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Shenandoah Waltz" is a different tune than the similarly named "Shenandoah Valley Waltz", and is also different than the country and western song "Shenandoah Waltz" recorded by Ernest Tubb and the Stanley Brothers, and Will F. Strong's "Shenandoah Waltz" published in 1884. Indiana fiddler John W. Summers (1887-1976) played a fairly faithful version of the waltz as printed by Ira Ford in his Traditional Music in America (1940), and may have learned it from the book. Unfortunately, Ford does not cite his source for the waltz, although it is possible he picked it up from a dance fiddler in Missouri.
