SIEGE OF ROCHELLE, THE (Seagad na Rocelle). Irish, Air (4/4 time, "spirited"). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A composition by Irish composer and opera singer Michael William Balfe [1] (1808-1870) included in O’Neill’s book of mainly traditional melodies. Though Balfe was a native Irishman, O’Neill was criticized in some circles for his inclusion of his compositions when “several of the traditional school” thought his compositions were “not Irish at all, even if he was” (O’Neill, 1913). See also his "Killarney," "Peace of the Valley (The)," "Heart Bowed Down (The)," and "Light of Other Days (The)."
